A League of Wonders
This is just a handy name for now. When this becomes reality, the naming will be led by our community. But the league concept is a fairly sound one. Probably it was first formulated by CONvergence directors Michael Lee and Chris Jones, when we discussed the idea of forming some kind of association of organizations, extending on the needs identified by MISFITS and the Society Board for more space.
A number of groups place a high value on self-determination and autonomy. But we want to find ways to do things together as well. Instead of talking about a super-organization that controls each of these other participants, and knowing we don’t want another board to be in charge, we want a league of equals. One geeky joke that was floated that we could have a “league of extraordinary conventions.” Of course we want to embrace more than conventions! But you gotta admit that’s pretty funny.
Getting involved
We need community leaders and participants, and our primary focus is geek communities. Geekiness crosses a lot of boundaries of genre, media, and interests. So we shouldn’t be afraid to think broad. Participating in a league designed this way would be by choice and you should be able to retain your organization’s originating vision(s), while seeing yourself as part of a larger tapestry of allies.
“Dream a little bigger”
Site founded by Jon Olsen, a Minneapolis-based geek, theologian, and writer. I have appeared in the MN Fringe production and independent film, Thaco. I am a member of the Minnesota Society for Interest in Science Fiction and Fantasy.
From the first SoDaCon 1-day gaming convention in Rapid City, SD through several Minicons, CONvergence, and Updated Weekly, I’ve been an active participant in fandom since 1991. I’ve been a gamer since I was nine, read science fiction, comics, and have titanic passions for certain genre television programs and movies. I am a community organizer with MNZero and a world-ranked player of the groundbreaking online/real world collaborative production game, SFZero. I am an all-around geek.
I currently serve on the board of directors for The Minnesota Society for Interest in Science Fiction and Fantasy, as the Director of Membership & Revenue for CONvergence. This website is a public version of a draft I brought to our board, but is not currently endorsed by any one organization. And the impetus for these discussions are by no means mine alone, but come out of lots of conversations with others. There have also been public discussions of some of the items herein with representatives of several other geek, fan, and community activist groups in Minnesota. Parties to those discussions will also appear here from time to time.
Though I am presenting it to many of my fellow geeks at the organizational level, make no mistake: This is a fan-driven affair first, seeking through the efforts of our community to become real. Let’s dream a little bigger.
